Introducing Shamba Ventures

Shamba Ventures is a not-for-profit, revenue-backed revolving fund investing in environmental and social outcomes. We invest in outcomes of direct commercial value to companies. We pay upfront (risk) to produce results. Outcome buyers only pay for verified results.

What we do

We provide upfront financing to help companies achieve their sustainability goals and reduce value chain losses linked to externalities. Once outcomes are achieved and verified, beneficiaries (companies, donors, governments, impact investors and philanthropists) pay for these outcomes at a discount relative to the total value created.

Examples of outcomes that we fund: adoption of climate-smart agriculture by smallholder farmers, deforestation-free supply chains, reduced agrochemical runoff, enhanced soil health and biological diversity, reduced Scope 3 emissions, etc.

Our model

  1. Shamba Ventures secures demand from companies that are interested in paying for outcomes that are of direct commercial value. At the same time, Shamba Ventures secures the commitment from donors and philanthropists to pay for other systemically-linked outcomes.

  2. Shamba Ventures provides upfront payments to SMEs, farmers and landowners to execute sustainable practices, use cleaner technologies, and achieve these outcomes.

  3. Once outcomes are achieved and verified, they are paid by ‘outcome buyers’ - the companies and donors referred to in step 1 above. By working with multiple outcome payers, we offer each company and donor a discount relative to the total value created (stacking outcomes).

  4. Revenue from outcome payments is reinjected into new transactions.

We are currently exploring the opportunities for transactions in Sri Lanka and beyond. Follow our work on LinkedIn and Instagram to learn more about what we are doing.
