It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the place of wilderness, it was the place of settlement, it was the scene of conservation, it was the scene of decay. In Rwanda and Sri Lanka, I found landscapes of striking contradictions: small but inspiring pockets of restoration in a sea of degradation shaped by human pressure.

Two countries, two landscapes, two stories. Yet, in many ways, they reflect the same underlying tension: even successful restoration is constrained because many of its benefits remain economically invisible
