G7 Ministerial Conference Uniting for Global Food Security

The Shamba Centre Executive Director, Carin Smaller, moderated the Berlin Ministerial Conference “Uniting for Global Food Security”, held on the 24 of June 2022.  The Ministerial was organised by the German Government in the run up to the 2022 G7 Summit at Schloss Elmau.

At the event, a bold commitment was tabled on curbing the global food crises and the continued transformation of agriculture and food statements towards sustainable development.  It paved the way for the G7 to announce, 4 days later at Schloss Elmau, that they will continue to spend an additional USD 4.5 billion in 2022 on global food security. The G7 hence committed to a total to USD 14 billion in crisis response and longer-term agriculture and food sustainability.

The Berlin Ministerial was attended by Ministers from over 40 countries and leadership from all major international organisations and development banks, as well as leaders from philanthropies and NGOs.  It was organised by three ministries, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Federal Ministry for Food and Agriculture.

The Conference showed that food crises have to be addressed in a systemic, multidimensional manner, with equal focus on globally coordinated humanitarian assistance in the immediate term and better development cooperation on sustainable agriculture and food policies in longer terms.  The Shamba Centre is proud to have been involved in the conference.  Watch the video back here.
